Casestudy: Dorothy Stringer High School, Brighton & HoveDorothy Stringer was a Pathfinder school for Enterprise 2003-5 and received extra funding to establish Enterprise in the curriculum. The project was given to business studies. They approached the Maths department to ask for 1 lesson per fortnight from the Year 10 provision, on the basis that mathematical skills could be demonstrated to be essential in business and in managing personal finance. Of the 20 lessons many incorporated financial capability and some of the materials are available here for
download.
- Keeping Your Balance; an activity devised to teach students how to monitor and manage what they spend against their income using a bank account. Includes different methods of payment, cash, debit and credit.
It requires only Chance Cards to be written for each day that either bring in income or require
spend.
- Credit Card Statement; Loan and APR table to help students consider and understand the formula used to work out the interest.
- Gorgeous Gateaux a complete activity to help students consider price setting in business; PowerPoint presentation, scoreboard template, profit and loss account, group decision record sheet and finally student assessment of learning and performance.

Decision, Year 10 PSHE
This activity was run with support from representatives from two local banks, who brought application forms. It can be difficult to get bank staff to attend. An alternative might be that students or teachers could research relevant accounts from two different banks.

Budgeting for Living Independently and
the Cost of Loans

with the Credit Card Spreadsheet
|
All lessons were delivered using Microsoft
PowerPoint presentations and the overheads used
are available here with overall programme plans
for each year group.
The game used in Year 9 could be run as a one-off
activity on an off-timetable curriculum enrichment
day or similar.
Also running across the school for the week was
the Teacher NAQ. 10 teachers were valued and all
students were invited to buy £100 worth of
shares. Each day 2 scenarios were announced which
affected share prices and students watched their
investments rise or fall. Year 9 charted the
changing market with graphs.
Maths staff at Peacehaven Community College would be very pleased to receive feedback from teachers who have used these materials. Alternatively, you may wish to contact them to discuss possibilities before use. Contact: Emma McGrath - emc.pcs@webmail.digitalbrain.com
